Death of inmates hits Chhattisgarh cops’ image

The Indian Express
November 23, 2004

RAIPUR, NOVEMBER 22: Barely a month after the last custody death was reported from Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh’s native district of Kawardah another Dalit family from Damiya has pointed an accusing finger at the police holding them responsible for the death of their son.

On Saturday, Jawala Prashad Shinde was finally handed over the body of his son, Suresh, after a second post-mortem at the Raipur Medical College that confirmed physical injuries. The 19-year-old’s last rites were performed at Damiya village on Sunday.

The youth, who eloped with a local girl, Poonam, allegedly consumed poison within hours of being summoned by police for questioning. His family alleges that Suresh took the extreme step when police tortured him and also ‘‘misbehaved’’ with the girl. The Bilaspur Inspector-General of Police, D.S. Rajpal, denied the charges.

There have been nine custodial deaths in Chhattisgarh since August, which have not only dented the image of the police but also of the BJP-led government.
